Donatos Pizza’s History
In Columbus, Ohio in 1963, a restaurant was opened with a dedication to providing high-quality pizza created by incredible employees and a focus on treating customers like family. This purpose has been codified in their brand motto: “To serve the best pizza and make your day a little better.” This new venture was spearheaded by Jim Grote, a graduate of Ohio State, and was so successful that there are now over 100 locations of this fantastic establishment.
1999 saw the restaurant purchased by McDonald’s like a venture into the pizza industry, an enterprise which was ultimately a failure. McDonald’s realized it wasn’t suited to the pizza business and Donatos found its way back home to the Grote family in 2003. Donatos has been offering franchise opportunities since 1991, and franchises now comprise approximately a quarter of all their operations.
