Popular Menu Items

The large appetizer selection makes Abuelo’s a fantastic place to meet friends for some drinks. The generous portions may encourage some patrons to have a starter for a meal! Those looking for lighter fare will find the salads and soups a great section of the menu to start looking.

The lunch menu includes several specials for those looking to eat on a budget. Parents should be sure to look over the children’s menu for kid favorites at very reasonable prices.
Below you will find our top recommended items from the menu:

Abuelo’s Dip Sampler

Here is a great starter if you are a dip lover and also have a hard time deciding. Three great flavors and plenty of chips make this a fun appetizer to share as well. You get generous portions of Chile con Queso, Avacado Cream and Queso Diablo all to yourself, or to share with the table for $7.99.

Reynosa Salad

This filling salad is going to be a hit for anyone seeking a hearty but healthy lunch or dinner meal. You can choose from seasoned ground beef or shredded chicken and it already comes with chile con queso, Charro beans, tomatoes, guacamole and cheese atop fresh greens. It comes in a full size for $9.29 or a half order for $6.99.

Pescado Guerrero

You will find this feast in the House Specialties section of the menu. It features Barramundi, also known as Asian Sea Bass, which is grilled to perfection and then mounded with roasted peppers, mushrooms and grilled shrimp. A white wine sauce finishes the dish. $16.99.

Bacon-Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp Fajitas

What makes shrimp fajitas even better? Bacon! These shrimp are stuffed with jalapeno and cheese and then wrapped in bacon before being served with all the traditional fajita fixin’s. If you are on a low carb diet, this is a great choice and you can have it served with lettuce for wrapping and skip the flour tortillas. $16.99.

Abuelo’s History

James Young immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan and opened his first restaurant featuring Asian food in 1975 and was soon expanding his operation across Western Texas. It was in 1988, after deciding that two of his Amarillo locations were too close together to be profitable, that Young teamed up with Abuelo’s cofounders Dirk Rambo and Chuck Anderson to convert one of the locations to Mexican cuisine.

The first Abuelo’s restaurant opened in 1989 in Amarillo, Texas. The founders wanted to offer scratch-made Mexican cuisine in an authentic atmosphere surrounded by art and architecture found in Mexico.  As of 2016 there are 38 Abuelo’s locations. Chef Luis Sanchez has been instrumental in developing the menu by sharing his own family recipes and making sure ingredients are prepared freshly before each meal.
