Red Robin’s History:
There was a building built in 1940 in Seattle, Washington that stood at the south end of the University Bridge and housed a tavern called Sam’s Tavern, owned by a man named Sam who later renamed the tavern Sam’s Red Robin because of his fondness for the song by that name. The restaurant was purchased by Gerry Kingen in 1969 who renamed it Red Robin.
In the early 70’s, Kingen added burgers to the menu which was a big hit for the largely college aged clientele from the nearby University of Washington. Ultimately he offered as many as 28 different types of burgers in a variety of custom flavor combinations.
In 1979 Kingen began franchising the restaurant. By 2000 there were 150 locations and Red Robin Corp. was sold to the Snyder Group which made the restaurant open for public shareholders in 2002. There are over 450 locations of Red Robin as of 2015.
