The Melting Pot’s History
In Maitland, Florida in 1975, the first Melting Pot was opened by Bruce Knoechel and Roy Nelson. A waiter at the restaurant by the name of Mark Johnston, along with brothers Mike and Bob, opened the first franchise of the restaurant in Tallahassee, and a second in Tampa in 1979. The Johnston brothers bought the chain in 1985 and set about expanding.
By 1995 there were 26 locations, and the menu expanded to include several health conscious items like Bourguignonne style pork, lobster, shrimp and duck as well as meats cooked in hot broth. In 2002, Amy Gil was added to the design staff and she added local art and a new aesthetic appeared in Melting Pot restaurants. In addition, the adult beverage section was widened and wine rooms were added to the décor.
As of 2010 there were 175 locations in the U.S. with global expansion plans underway.
