Whataburger’s History
The first location of Whataburger was opened in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas by founders Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton.
After a disagreement over pricing their signature burger, the founders parted ways and Dobson remained owner of the company while Burton headed up a collection of franchises.
The company remains family owned by the Dobson family as well as a group of 25 franchisers.
The first Whataburger with the iconic orange and white A-frame design was opened in 1961 in Odessa, Texas.
The first drive through was added in 1971. In the 1980’s some locations started offering 24-hour service and added breakfast items to the menu.
As of 2012 there were 735 locations of Whataburger across the United States.
