Au Bon Pain History
Au Bon Pain founder Louis Kane opened the first location in 1978 in Boston, Massachusetts in the famous Faneuil Hall marketplace.
Kane was originally inspired by the capabilities of the Pavailler line of French baking equipment, showcased in a storefront in the same marketplace a few years earlier. In fact, Pavailler invested in the first Au Bon Pain location by contributing an extensive collection of top tier baking equipment.
Louis Kane continued to grow and consolidate power for Au Bon Pain. By 2014 the company had over 243 stores in the USA and restaurants in Thailand and India. Excellent baked goods and strong management have turned this simple concept into a bakery business bonanza.
Fun Facts: Au Bon Pain translates to “the good bread.” The famous logo at Au Bon Pain is from a typeface designed by artist Paul Renner in 1929 called “Futura Black.”
