Denny’s History
In 1953 Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened a 24 hour donut and coffee shop called Danny’s Donuts in Lakewood, California. In 1956, Jezak left the chain and Butler changed the name of now 8 restaurant locations to Danny’s Coffee Shop. In 1959, the name changed to Denny’s Coffee Shop to avoid confusion with a competing coffee shop in LA. Finally, in 1961, the name was changed simply to Denny’s.
By 1981 the steady expansion of the chain had amounted to 1,000 restaurants. In 2010, a partnership with Pilot Flying J placed Denny’s restaurants in all of the Flying J truck stops making Denny’s the leading full service restaurant at popular traveling stops on major highways. As of 2014 there are approximately 1,700 Denny’s locations.
Fun Fact: The Grand Slam, one of Denny’s most enduring customer favorite combination breakfasts, was added to the menu in 1971. In The Lower Manhattan location there is a secret menu item known as the Grand Cru Slam. It is a regular Grand Slam served with a bottle of Dom Pérignon for a cool $300.
