El Torito’s History
When you made the Margarita popular in the United States, you know you played an important role in American History. The restaurant that holds this claim to fame was founded by Larry J. Cano and is known as El Torito. He had been working as a bartender when the owner passed away, and the widow of the owner offered it to Larry. While it initially was a popular stop for veterans, he eventually had to bring Mexican cooking in to help pay the bills, and that was when it changed its original name to El Torito.
Three years later El Torito was famous enough to merit opening new locations, and in the 19 years to follow it would open 20 additional sites. Today the business has a total of 69 locations throughout the United States and holds its position as a leader in California’s Mexican casual dining industry.
